sunkitten_shashA semi-comprehensive list of omegaverse elements and my thoughts on how I do/don’t like them, as a person who on the whole loves omegaverse. Includes links to fics that I pulled specific concepts from and recommendations for explorations/uses of tropes that I enjoyed. Most of the omegaverse I read is kpop (primarily BTS & Stray Kids), so that will be reflected in my general exposure to omegaverse (look I think the style can differ a lot between fandoms) and in the fics I mention.
There are some recs that are repeated across sections; I put them wherever they applied. Some sections may not have any/many recs, this just means I had trouble finding or remembering fics that felt like particularly good examples, sorry.
I do like all my recs and think they are worth reading. I don’t necessarily claim that they are all the paragon of quality, just that there’s something compelling in them.
Please feel free to give me more recs or feedback on my thoughts! I love omegaverse and love reading everyone’s variations and thoughts on it!
- Betas
- Not overly particular
- Enjoy interesting things with betas or a specific role for them. Standouts:
- betas having both heats and ruts/some kind of mating cycle of their own, or betas adjusting to hormones around them and slicking/knotting a bit
- betas basically being a term for intersex wolves
- etc.
- Enjoy betas being the most sensitive/perceptive to scents
- Enjoy betas being able to both slick up and knot
- Do not like betas just being normal humans and especially not being able to scent at all
- Don’t mind betas having lighter/more subtle scents, or being a little less ruled by instincts if it’s used thoughtfully but I don’t like them not really being able to participate in the omegaverse dynamics at all
- Personal canon: Betas are the like calmers/peacemakers and good at taking care of things and managing
- Fics I enjoy with interesting betas:
- Star-Studded by theproblematique (Stray Kids; a lot of ships; features betas with notably better senses of smell who can pick up significantly more emotion than other subgenders and includes a good amount of beta perspectives & thoughts)
- GCF - Golden Closet Flips by dirtysope & wispyoongi (BTS; Vminkook & Sope; betas have both heats and ruts, though this is only mentioned incidentally; does have a good omega/omega(/omega) relationship)
- it’s alright (look straight at me) series by sirradel (BTS; OT7; the pack does a beta appreciation day; discussion of different treatment of betas in different places and how betas should be celebrated)
- Under Extreme Duress by sssrha (MDZS; Wangxian; crack; betas are tasked with trying to keep extremely horny alphas and omegas from fucking)
- Be Beta by Anonymous (ATEEZ; Hongjoong/Seonghwa/Mingi; betas can get wet and/or knot depending on who they’re around and this is explored and celebrated)
- sherbet by TH1RDEYE (Stray Kids; Minho/Jeongin; light exploration of betas’ bodies and uniqueness)
- skin tight by LetMeDown (Stray Kids; Jisung/Jeongin w/ background OT8; another one with physically adaptable betas)
- eunoia! by sourfaith (TXT; Yeonjun/Beomgyu/Soobin; betas can re-present as another subgender; newly re-presented omega Soobin tries to nest; lots of subgender feelings)
- oblivious betas in your area! by grips (Stray Kids; Minho/Jisung/Seungmin; Seungmin thinks that betas are supposed to have a very background role and is oblivious to alpha/omega couple Minsung courting him; a lot of discussion of betas’ role in society & relationships)
- Common Scents by halotolerance (BTS; Namgi; beta as basically a term for intersex/intersubgender people; lots of discussion of subgenders)
- Mating bites & bonds
- Love mating bites in general being used
- I prefer mating bites that are reciprocal (they both need to bite each other)
- Sometimes I see ones where just the pack alpha needs to bite; I don’t mind this, as especially in larger packs that’s simply so many bites, but I do prefer a reciprocal situation
- It also feels less traditional or at least tied in to traditional roles; what if there’s a pack without an alpha or traditional pack alpha?

- Enjoy the idea of having a temporary mating bond during mating cycles that needs extra steps to be permanent
- Enjoy when mental bond is explored
- Enjoy descriptions of the euphoria when biting
- Like when they come when biting/bitten
- Enjoy the mating bite scar being looked at/touched/appreciated/reopened
- Enjoy when a newly bonded couple needs to not be separated from each other for a bit
- Enjoy some kind of bite involved in packs
- Not a huge fan of only alphas being able to do mating bites, or it only working in an alpha/omega relationship; I prefer all subgenders to be able to bond
- Not a huge fan of accidental mating bites/not being able to stop yourself from biting partner in the heat of the moment in heat or rut
- Can be fun, and usually won’t turn me away from a fic, but sometimes overused and can lean more into mating cycles being completely uncontrollable/not being able to control themselves than is my favorite
- Fics I enjoy for this trope:
- Incalescence by dirtysope & wispyoongi (BTS; Namjin; fantasy AU; has the temporary bond during cycles; this fic explores it the most in the series, some discussion in Blooming as well, which also gets more into fated mates)
- Appetite by bayou (Stray Kids; OT8, somewhat Hyunsung-focused; aftershocks of the intimacy of the pack getting bonded)
- Trans themes
- LOVE IT
- Enjoy a variety of complex themes being explored with this
- Neutral on bitching fics
- There should definitely be more studding fics though
- Fics I enjoy with this trope:
- Common Scents by halotolerance (BTS; Namgi; trans and intersex as interacts with omegaverse; Yoongi is a beta and is intersex, this is heavily explored)
- on my pillow, right beside you by yoonluun (BTS; Taegi but more gen focused; trans alpha Yoongi nesting; very soft)
- principles of ownership by lovehotline (Stray Kids; Minho/Changbin/Seungmin/Jeongin; Changbin gets bitched - this one is maybe a harder sell but it’s got strong trans vibes)
- no control, i need you now by teej_tiger (Stray Kids; OT8 w/ Chanlix focus; Felix gets bitched very trans style)
- Hyung has a Solution by PurpleNailsAnon (Stray Kids; OT8; Chan decides to stud himself to help the all-omega pack through heats better; lots of discussion of how bitching & studding works)
- March 31st by Midshipman (MDZS; Wangxian; WWX was originally an alpha but MXY was an omega; explorations of subgender dysphoria)
- Gender & subgender, subgender prevalence
- Not a huge fan of certain gender & subgender combinations (e.g. female alphas or male omegas) being extremely uncommon
- Not a huge fan of the majority of the population being betas with only a few alphas and omegas (especially when combined with “normal human” betas)
- Not a huge fan of the trope of hiding one’s subgender (usually omegas pretending to be betas), can be done well but will usually turn me off a fic
- Not a huge fan of omegaverse not being universal/most of the population being “normal” and only some people are alphas/betas/omegas
- It can work for me, especially with more werewolfy stuff going on, but usually not my favorite vibe
- Not a huge fan of the omegaverse suddenly happening to an otherwise “normal” world, I want it to always have existed
- Don’t like when subgenders/secondary genders are strictly limited to specific biological sexes (e.g. alphas are only men/omegas are only women)
- Mating cycles
- Love most heatfic
- Enjoy omegas helping each other out
- Enjoy omegas doing best when they get several orgasms before a knot in each heat wave
- Enjoy omegas being in some amount of pain for heats
- Enjoy people being especially emotional and sensitive during their cycles
- Bonus points for crying
- Enjoy heats being triggered by something, or coming early, or omegas’ heats syncing up
- Heats being triggered early can be a bit overused, but I do enjoy it a lot. Less of my favorite when they’re triggered directly from someone else’s cycle, but I don’t mind much
- Enjoy discussions of suppressants and how they’re used
- Can enjoy relatively nonsexual heats; I want at least some sexual aspect to them or sexual possibility but I don’t mind if it’s mostly nonsexual or can be helped nonsexually
- However, I’m not a huge fan of it being absolutely necessary for omegas to have sex with another person during heat
- Neutral on length of heats; prefer them to be at least a couple of days
- Not a big fan of heats or ruts being significantly shorter when spent with someone, especially not a “one knot and your heat is broken” kind of situation
- Not a big fan of not knowing you’re going into heat/rut
- Can be fine but I think it’s overused and often annoying to me, and I tend to prefer people knowing their bodies and the signs of mating cycles
- Not a big fan of mating cycles where the person is completely out of it or out of control of their actions/instincts, or where other people are completely unable to resist them
- I enjoy the person going through a heat/rut not being very lucid, and pheromones having a big effect on everyone involved, but less a fan when they’re completely out of control or don’t feel/act like themselves
- Not a big fan of heats and ruts syncing up or triggering each other, I prefer them to be separate things
- Enjoy omegas’ heats syncing up with each other, though
- Personal canon: Omegas in heat cannot consent to something/someone they didn’t agree to beforehand (also goes for alphas in rut). Don’t mind if stories believe differently, but this is my general preferred stance.
- Fics I enjoy that are focused on mating cycles:

- like a fever series by omegatherapy (Enhypen; whole group poly; Heeseung-centric heat fluff just so much heat fluff)
- after hours by winterwaltz6 (Haikyuu; SakuAtsu; just very solid heat fic)
- The Peculiarities of Heats by MurderRose (Seventeen; OT13, Jeonghan-focused; interesting worldbuilding around heats, this author does a lot of interesting things with omegaverse worldbuilding in their fics)
- helping hand by seungmnbias (Stray Kids; OT8, Jeongin-focused; alpha Jeongin hates the texture of slick so he finds non-standard ways of helping the omegas with their heats; gets into details of heats & ways they differ)
- Genitals
- Love knots
- Fun fact I used to think that a knot “going down” involved it physically traveling down the length of the alpha’s cock. I’m like 90% sure now that that’s incorrect and also a little silly and that it’s just the knot deflating over time, but idk I still think it’s a good idea. You get to feel the knot in a bunch of different places inside! Surely that feels good!
- Prefer knots to take a decent amount of time to go down, not just a couple minutes. Minimum of 10 minutes preferably, longer is good.
- Enjoy knots also appearing outside of heat/rut, especially if they only sometimes happen when an alpha comes
- Enjoy most variations fine
- Enjoy omegas having a smaller cock if subgender genital differences are included; prefer this to not having a cock
- Not a huge fan of omegas just having a clit and pussy
- Fics I enjoy with/for genital variations:
- Haze by exarite (BTS; OT7, Yoonkook-focused; secret pregnancy & exploration of the “breeding haze” that comes with mating cycles; in this universe, everyone is born with the same parts and they develop in one direction or another depending on subgender)
- after hours by winterwaltz6 (Haikyuu; SakuAtsu; depiction of omegas with a cock and pussy that I do like)

- Neutral on this as a whole; won’t make me more interested in a fic, probably won’t make me less interested
- Enjoy the omega/the birthing parent being called the mother
- Enjoy breeding kink fine, like it more in omegaverse than in other contexts
- Don’t like explicit details about where the baby is coming out from. Please don’t make me think about assbabies too hard.
- Packs
- LOVE LOVE LOVE packs as opposed to individual mated couples; there is nothing in this world I love more than kpop omegaverse with the whole group being a mated pack.
- Love people talking & thinking about pack, whether they are officially in a pack or they are all romantic together or not
- Enjoy mix of individual mated couples within pack as well (e.g., pack as a whole is platonic but has mated couples), and explorations of different relationships and sub-dynamics within a pack
- Fics I enjoy with this trope:
- A lot of my other recs feature packs since I favor them a lot in my reading

- Personal canon: Scenting on the neck/with faces is more intimate & possibly sexual than wrist scenting (originally sourced from The White Wolf’s Shadow by ShadowDrifter)
- Fics I enjoy with good scenting:
- Open Your Hands (Open Your Life) by rainyleafs (Stray Kids; OT8; Felix is taken in by the rest of the members’ pack; very long but has TONS of scenting and discussion of scenting and scents)

- Mating runs/Chasing
- Love chasing
- Most interested in chasing/hunting/being caught as an instinct, esp when used kinda playfully
- Enjoy mating runs fine; not an especially favored trope but I do always enjoy it

- shoot your shot - hot or knot by defractum (MDZS; Wangxian; omegaverse with a reality show that’s combination Love Island and Hunger Games; the use of chasing in this is a bit more nonstandard but it is present and this is a fantastic story all around) (Podfic by Opalsong)
- true love and other impossible things by aurora_lix (Stray Kids; Chanlix; depiction of mini mating run situation for the actual mating after engagement)
- Traditionality/general society things
- Not picky, like both quite traditional and weird nontraditional omegaverse
- Love some flexibility in societal roles/sexual roles/personality/dominance of the different subgenders
- Love exploration of how this omegaverse society works, digging into social worldbuilding, people’s thoughts about it, etc.
- Not a huge fan of there being really big societal inequality or omegas basically being owned
- Shifters/actual werewolves
- Enjoy it generally, not my usual personal canon but can be fun
- Fics I enjoy with this trope:
- into the woods by shadowsinsounds (BTS; Yoonmin; college AU)
- feral jk by feraljk (BTS; OT7; feral omega Jungkook gets taken in by OT7 pack)
- Presentation
- Enjoy either subgenders being known since childhood or presenting as late teen/young adult and not knowing subgender before that
- I think subgenders being known from birth is an underused way to do omegaverse, honestly
- Enjoy explorations of feelings associated with presentation, esp. mixed/complicated/negative feelings around it
- Neutral on the late presentation/thought you were a beta but now you’re going into heat trope
- It’s decent, and can provide fun scenarios, but it’s very very overused imo. Won’t turn me away from a fic, but if it’s not done especially well I will go “ugh this is so overused”
- Fics I enjoy focused around this:

- 다가오는 저 폭풍우를 견뎌 줘 series by kamsangi (Stray Kids; Chanlix with OT8 vibes as well; late-presenting alpha Chan having a lot of complicated feelings and grief over it; sets my brain on fire)
- jisung needs a bigger closet by rosepetqls (Stray Kids; OT8/gen, Jeongin-focused; sex-repulsed ace Jeongin dealing with presenting as an omega)
- Enjoy either subgenders being known since childhood or presenting as late teen/young adult and not knowing subgender before that

- Can enjoy a combination of omegaverse and hybrid AUs
- Tend to enjoy these more than just hybrids on their own
- I just tend to be pretty picky about the vibe for hybrids
- Not a huge fan of the terms alpha/beta/omega being capitalized

- An Elegant Mechanism by Laughsalot3412 (KinnPorsche; KimChay; fantastic societal explorations of omegaverse and particularly expectations for omegas & how this has affected omega Kim) (Podfic by me)
- little world fallin’ apart by sinkingmyships (Stray Kids; Chanlix with strong OT8 pack vibes as well; okay this is not omegaverse but it does hit a lot of the things I like about omegaverse; Chan is unexpectedly a werewolf and they have to figure out how to resolve this; lots of stuff about wolf feelings and sensations and Pack, great fic)
- Open up for me by tangerinescream (Stray Kids; Minsung; Minho unexpectedly goes into rut and this leads to confession, lots of rut sex, etc.; just an overall fun solid fic)
